Max Perez and his incredible coffee were introduced to us by our long-time homies Abdiel and Ryan who export coffee from the Acatenango and Yepocapa regions of Guatemala. Abdiel and Ryan just recently started working with Don Perez but that’s no reflection of his long history in coffee. In fact, Don Perez is a fourth-generation coffee farmer originally from the northern region of Huehuetenango. However, in 2010 Don Perez and his wife bought an abandoned farm in the Acatenango valley and have transformed the overgrown land into Finca La Hermosa. The years of hard work and financial investment to build this new farm have yielded incredible results as Finca La Hermosa has been awarded 10 times the Cup of Excellence winner in Guatemala and has been seven consecutive years as the regional winner in Acatenango.
The farm is divided into thirteen plots and they grow traditional varieties as pache, typica, caturra, and bourbon, as well as more delicate and exotic varietals like pacamara and geisha. What’s more, they maintain 100% organic agricultural practices as they strive to be proper stewards of the environment and Don Perez focuses on corporate social responsibility as well to build an agricultural management system that is economically viable for all parties involved.
Don Perez and his crew exemplify the values and mission (and success) specialty coffee can bring to producing regions. In his own words, “Quality doesn’t come by chance, so all our coffees are carefully hand-picked and processed following the best practices for the washed, natural, and honey methods … Of course, the job doesn’t stop here. We keep moving towards innovation and improvement.”
