Bolivia is a unique coffee-producing origin and we’re excited to have a couple of offerings from the country for the first time in our line-up. We were introduced to some incredible coffees by the family-run, Agricafe. Agricafe was started in 1986 by Pedro Rodriguez, the owner of multiple high-caliber specialty farms in Bolivia. Over the years he has brought his daughter Daniela and his son Pedro Pablo into the businesses as they strive to create more representation of Bolivian coffee in the international specialty coffee market. Through Agricafe, the Rodriguez family has helped farmers across the country develop infrastructure to produce high-quality specialty coffee on a large scale.
One such example is Communidad Taypiplaya, a coffee farming/producing cooperative effort started by Agricafe. It is one of the only remaining collectives producing top coffees in the Yungas region as many coffee producers are turning to the less regulated coca market. In the last 10 years, coffee production across the country has continuously dropped. Whereas in 2010 exports were around 70,000 bags, in 2021 the numbers were as low as 30,000 bags. The aim of Agricafe is to do its part in reversing this trend while allowing coffee producers to have a fair price for their hard work.
We’re excited to be partnering with Agricafe in this pursuit to build a thriving coffee market for smallholders in Bolivia. The added bonus in this work, the coffee is super tasty! You’ll find classic washed characteristics in Taypiplaya’s community lot with layered citrus & floral complexity.
